About the Team
Opus is based out of Detroit and consists of a team of sailors ranging in ages from 24 to over 70. We have been competitively sailing Opus together for over 5 years. We participate in local week night races as well as the more serious Saturday races on Lake St. Clair trying to get on the water at minimum twice a week weather permitting. All of this of course is in preparation for the big race- the 298 mile race up the length of Lake Huron finishing on Mackinac Island.
in a variety of races including our week night “beer can races” as well as the “big show” which is the 298mi Bayview Mackinac Race.
Though we like to remain a bit serious while racing, we are sailors after all and there are few things that taste better on a hot summer day than an ice cold Labatt out of the cooler. I swear it has been that way longer than I can remember. Labatt is almost the unofficial “official” beer of sailing in the Detroit area. We even have rules of how to properly hand the helmsman an LBL when they give “the look” and we can’t forget to mention our tradition of each of the crew shotgunning one on the foredeck after we finish a distance race. Labatt Blue and sailing just work together.
Though our team colors may vary depending on the crew shirts worn that day, one thing is for certain, when our competitors see our big blue and white spinnaker sail, they know Opus is coming!
